The specialists of the ophthalmic center at Friedrichshafen clinic, headed by an experienced eye surgeon Prof. DM Arnd Gandorfer, offer treatment оf eye diseases in Germany. Technological intelligence and professional excellence contributes to the success of the department. Thousands of patients have restored their vision at Friedrichshafen.
The refractive eye surgery implies ophthalmological surgeries for modifying the eye's power of refraction to compensate ametropy.
Specialists in refractive eye surgery in Germany apply various laser vision correction methods, such as LASIK, Femto LASIK, LASEK and photorefractive keratectomy. Other methods of refractive eye surgery include: special techniques of eye cornea discission, eye cornea transplantation and surgeries on eye lenses with artificial intraocular lens implantation. Only a professional ophthalmologist specialized in refractive eye surgery is able to choose proper therapy method. The reasonability of applying refractive surgery should be discussed during the visit to a specialist in this area.
The refractive surgery is an ophthalmic surgery, which can dramatically change the the refraction capacity of an eye and thus, to forget about glasses or contact lenses. The refractive surgery is applied in case of the following diseases:
Which method of refractive surgery is the best for you is decided in case of detailed diagnostics and consultations.
The incision of eye tissues can be performed on different depth of cornea layers. Depending on the selected method the layers are either located under the top cornea layer or deeper inside. The laser surgery methods include LASIK, FemtoLASIK (femtosecond LASIK), LASEK (epithelial LASIK) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), a predecessor of LASEK technology.
LASIK stands for "Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis", or laser keratomileusis. It implies the modification of cornea shape with the aim of laser energy. As laser allows dissecting extremely thin tissue layers, it helps to “model” corneal curvature. A microkeratome can be used for this. It dissects the layer from the anterior cornea side with the aim of a fast oscillating razor. This layer is not fully dissected; it is connected with the cornea on one side. The corneal graft, also called “flap”, is put to the side to open inner corneal tissues. A surgeon evaporates the required amount of corneal tissue with the aim of short pulses of excimer laser. This changes the power of light refraction, correcting the ametropy. Then the graft is put back to its bed to avoid corneal injuries.
The corneal flap can be prepared using a femtosecond laser system. This laser device sends light impulses in infrared band, and they are fixated on predefined corneal area with the highest possible preciseness. Each impulse leads to the appearance of corneal layer separation point. According to the computer-controlled scheme, thousands of light impulses are directed to the cornea forming the flap. Laser femtosecond flap is more precise than the flap dissected by a microkeratome. The further surgery process is similar to LASIK method.
LASEK means "Laser assistierte subepitheliale Keratomileusis", i.e. laser epithelial keratomileusis. LASIK method implies the reformation of cornea using laser energy. Similar to LASIK method, a surgeon dissects a very thin tissue layer, forming the required corneal curvature. As opposite to LASIK method, LASEK implies using a special alcohol solution applied on an eye surface for a few seconds. As a result epithelium loses the stable connection with corneal surface and provides access to its tissue. This layer can be put aside from the surface as a thin flap. After opening the corneal tissue surface, a surgeon can dissect the required amount of tissue by short laser impulses.
If the curvature of the cornea is not well pronounced, in certain cases it is possible to make a correction by means of special laxative laser-cuts. They can are also be performed during cataract surgery to optimize the resulting refraction.
