The incision of eye tissues can be performed on different depth of cornea layers. Depending on the selected method the layers are either located under the top cornea layer or deeper inside. The laser surgery methods include LASIK, FemtoLASIK (femtosecond LASIK), LASEK (epithelial LASIK) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), a predecessor of LASEK technology.
LASIK stands for "Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis", or laser keratomileusis. It implies the modification of cornea shape with the aim of laser energy. As laser allows dissecting extremely thin tissue layers, it helps to “model” corneal curvature. A microkeratome can be used for this. It dissects the layer from the anterior cornea side with the aim of a fast oscillating razor. This layer is not fully dissected; it is connected with the cornea on one side. As opposite to LASIK method, LASEK implies using a special alcohol solution applied on an eye surface for a few seconds.
