Treatment of Fibroids

Friedrichshafen Clinic in Germany is a multi-disciplinary medical institution with wide range of services. Gynecology Department of the Clinic provides modern treatment of benign and malignant pathologies of the reproductive organs of women, including the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors developing in the muscle layer of the body. Fibroids lead to menstruation disorder, as well as significantly affect women's reproductive function.

Diagnosis of fibroids is correlating with the weeks of pregnancy. That means, fibroid increased uterus is compared with the uterus increased as a result of pregnancy.

Fibroid treatment is carried out both conservative and surgical measures. Typically, drug therapy does not relieve a woman from disease, so sooner or later she has to resort to surgical invasion.

The specialists of the Gynecology Department of the Friedrichshafen Clinic, when possible always prefer selecting sparing fibroids treatment or uterine artery embolization. However, when those measures are found impossible or ineffective, sometimes, removal of the uterus – hysterectomy – is the only way to help a patient. In Germany, minimally invasive surgery is always a first priority, so the treatment normally performed by laparoscopy or through the vagina.

Uterine Artery Embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)/ uterine artery embolization treatment is commonly used for patients of reproductive age, who want to have children in the future. Embolization is blockage of the lumen of the artery supplying the tumor with blood. The therapeutic effect of the procedure is achieved through tumor cells regress due to reducing of blood flowing to fibroid which causing it shrinking and death.

Uterine artery embolization is performed in X-ray Lab under local anesthesia. Under X-ray control a doctor introduces a catheter through the patient's femoral artery to the fibroid node. For this purpose, miniature access (up to10 mm long) to the artery is performed.

After uterine artery embolization a clinical observation of a patient is required due to a pain caused by cessation of fibroids nutrition. Sometimes painkillers might be prescribed.

The treatment lasts about 30 minutes but the effect will be noticeable after 3 months: tumor volumes will reduce by more than 40%. And only a small part of the neoplasm will remain after 12 months.

The advantages and distinctive feathers of uterine artery embolization in Germany:

  • It is absolutely save for a patient;
  • It is one of the quickest way of fibroids treatment;
  • Embolization does not damage the uterine artery, so there is no risk of insufficient blood supply to the uterus;
  • When choosing a method of uterine fibroid embolization, a patient feels a reduction in disease symptoms in a few days;
  • A short recovery period;
  • When treating fibroids in Germany by method of uterine artery embolization, the risk of complications in average 20 times lower than with surgery;
  • No damage to the uterus for the treatment of uterine fibroids;
  • Embolization does not cause menstrual disorder and female reproductive function disorder.

Organ-preserving Operations

Treatment of uterine by organ-preserving surgery is aimed to remove the abnormal nodes. In Germany, a preference is always given to minimal invasive surgery; that is why, in case of myomectomy, access by endoscopic instruments is through the vagina or through the abdomen.

Myomectomy is performed under general anesthesia. The operation lasts up to two hours. Postoperative observation is carried out in a hospital for 3-5 days, and total recovery period lasts up to three weeks.

Laparoscopic treatment of fibroids is performed through a few incisions (up to 2 cm) in the abdomen. Laparoscopic instruments and an endoscope – a tube with a camera on the end – are introduced into those cuts. Endoscopic image is translated to a high-resolution screen that allows you to intervene with a high precision and accuracy.

Organ-preserving fibroid treatment preserves fertility and menstrual function of women. In addition, when performing the operation in Germany a low percentage of recurrence of disease in patients is indicated.

Vaginal Hysterectomy

Vaginal hysterectomy is a removal of the uterus through the vagina by endoscopic instruments. Treatment is carried out under general anesthesia. After surgery, a patient stays in the hospital for a few days for observation.

Using vaginal hysterectomy is excluded any incisions of the body that provides the good cosmetic effect after the procedure. Moreover, the recovery after this operation is much easier and faster.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is the uterus excision through a few small access points in the abdominal wall. This kind of treatment, in comparison to conventional operations, has a lower risk of complications. In addition, due to the low level of damage to healthy tissue, patient’s rehabilitation period elapses much easier and faster.

Hysterectomy in Germany, of course, 100% exclude a risk of recurrence of fibroids, which differ with organ-preserving surgery. However, after the uterus removal women lose their reproductive function. Therefore, this treatment of fibroids is not acceptable for younger patients.
