Shoulder pain

The Clinical Center of Friedrichshafen offers the highly differentiated diagnostics of joint pain and joint therapy tailored to your individual needs. Pain syndrome in the area of shoulder can have various causes: not only pathological processes and diseases, but also injuries, sprains caused by exertion. The most important thing to do is to visit a doctor in good time. Occasional pain syndrome in the area of joints should not be left unnoticed, otherwise long-term treatment, or even surgical intervention, may be required. The most common shoulder injuries are dislocation, bruises, sprains, muscle and ligament rupture.

Possible causes of pain syndrome in shoulder area

Pain in shoulder joint can also be caused by the following diseases:

  • Arthritis. This disease provokes inflammation in synostosis cavity and requires treatment. Any movement causes severe pain.
  • Cervical osteochondrosis. In this case pain intensifies while turning and tilting your head, there is numbness in shoulder and arm.
  • Periarthritis. Characterized by “causeless” pain in shoulder joint which usually manifests at night and extends to the neck or arm. Patients also feel pricking and have so called “goose pimples”.
  • Arthrosis. In case of this disease shoulder joint gets deformed and ruptures. Pain considerably intensifies with additional exertion; later the joint loses its mobility and completely ruptures.
  • Tendinitis. Characterized by inflammation in ligaments. Mostly common for people whose work is connected with locomotor apparatus overload. Pain dramatically intensifies when moving your arm and fingers in particular.
  • Bursitis. This disease is accompanied by constant but not very severe pain.
  • Calcinations. People of 30-50 years old suffer from this disease which is accompanied by constant severe pain. The pain gets worse with every movement.

Experts of Friedrichshafen clinic stick to the following series of actions when treating shoulder pain:

  1. Consultation of orthopedist for provisional diagnosis and estimation of possible mechanical examination scope.
  2. Joint X-ray is required for specifying pathology pattern, joint biomechanics and excluding such dangerous diseases as tumours, osteoporosis, aseptic necrosis, fractures, etc.
  3. Ultrasound or MRI of shoulder joint is used to diagnose the condition of joint soft tissues (which are the most common cause of pain in the joint).
  4. Doctor assesses the results of mechanical examination, compares them with their own examination conclusions and makes final diagnosis. Only correct diagnosis allows proceeding to treatment. If there are clinical, ultrasound or MRI signs of inflammation process in shoulder joint, additional laboratory examination may be required.

Interdisciplinary approach is important for diagnosing and treating diseases of shoulder joint. In some cases it is necessary to visit a neurologist or a physician. Also, if other medical or body system diseases causing shoulder pain are found, you should be treated by a dedicated expert.

Shoulder joint: MRI diagnostic

Shoulder joint MRI is conducted to specify the condition of bone and soft tissues of the joint. For instance, pain can be caused by early stages of tumour process (so called paraneoplastic process), but the tumour itself may be small and hard to spot with a usual X-ray. Such MRI diagnostics allows taking effective measures in good time. Specialized MRI program modes are preferred for this kind of diagnostics as they help to detect bone pathology at its early stage, when there are no changes seen on the X-ray, but it is possible to provide effective help. Modern CT scanners usually have such program modes.

MRI shows traumatic and inflammatory changes in muscles, ligaments, articular capsules and condition of articular cartilages. MRI can distinguish, for example, traumatic fracture of humeral bone from pathological fracture as a result of tumour or osteoporosis.

Treating shoulder joint pain

Treating shoulder joint pain must be comprehensive and include using various medication:

  • Nonsteroid anti-inflammatory agents;
  • Vasodilating agents improving blood supply of the damaged area;
  • Cartilage protectors protecting and restoring damaged cartilaginous tissue;
  • Vitamin and mineral complex.

Anti-inflammatory ointments and gels, direct drug introduction into the cavity of damaged junctions, physiotherapeutic procedures, curative gymnastics and massage have also proved effective.

Depending on etiology and severity, patient may need a surgery – shoulder joint arthroscopy.

Shoulder pain caused by osteoarthrosis, constriction, wear or rupture of tendons under clavicle acromial process (bottleneck syndrome), calcinations, shoulder instability after dislocation – all these and many other causes of shoulder pain require quality surgical treatment. Sometimes shoulder replacement is the only way to eliminate the problem. The cost for joint replacement as well as the type of an implant are calculated individually.

As causes of shoulder pain can be various, it can be difficult to make a correct diagnosis and develop appropriate treatment program, we recommend visiting only skilled experts if you suffer from painful sensations in shoulder girdle. Our specialists at Friedrichshafen clinic can help you deal with this problem.
